    I played this solo at my state’s solo and ensemble competition and got a one!! Last year, my freshman year, I did the same for Mean Man Matt. This entire book is full of amazing solos from beginning to end. I remember my first snare solo ever was in 8th grade and it was Single Strokin’, and I continue to use the beginner solos to help teach my younger brother. These videos are very helpful 🙏 thank you for everything you do!!

      Hahahaha! Thanks...I think! WE used the REMO Black Max on the batter side and REMO clear Mylar (cranked) on the bottom. I wanted to get a little snare resonance in the session (hence the mylar) so the drum would not sound like a table top...! The MAPEX snare units are great giving me a lot of latitude in how much response I do or don't want. Unfortunately, I hear and judge many HS lines that are ridiculously dry and boned to the moon...so much so that the kids cannot present decent ensemble unity even when they are well trained!

    In measure 6, there is a tie between the "uh" of beat one and the down beat of beat 2. Do I actually play that down beat or is it silent since it's tied to the end of beat one? If I AM meant to play that first hit of beat one, is it with my right hand straight into the next drag?

    • @edwardfreytag
      @edwardfreytag 10 місяців тому

      OK...first, I suggest you really watch the vid at around 2:18...you will get to both see and hear the lick/measure you are referencing. To break it down...in measure 6...the first drag (LL), I would place on the "uh" of 2 of measure 5...the RH eighth note is right on count 1...the next drag (LL) would be placed on the "e" of 1...the next two 16th notes would logically be on "&" "uh" of 1. The tied 16th note on the downbeat of 2 will not be played. The next drag (RR) will be on the downbeat of 2 taking the place of the tied 16th note. The next 16th note will logically be on "e" of 2 followed by the RH eighth note on the "&" of 2. There it is... Hope that makes sense.

    • @edwardfreytag
      @edwardfreytag 5 місяців тому

      Sorry about the delay in my response...just saw this post! My counting would be...1 e - & o let - 2 o let - & ah. Some would count it as 1 e - & ta ta - 2 ta ta - & ah. Either is correct.

      Interesting comment...thanks a ton for the positive vibe. I make it clear that what William and I are doing is not traditional in any way other than how good the groove feels. What we do works great for us in recording sessions, jazz small groups, jazz big bands, and any other ensembles we play with...which are many! I've never had complaints about any grooves I or we play...I have performed w/ Eliane Elias, Randy Brecker, Dizzy Gillespie, Aretha Franklin, and many others. The grooves we play are designed to stretch the envelope of what people have always played...we are doing that very successfully and with much approval for the styles and feels. If you don't dig it...then don't play it. That simple...there it is.

And to see all the rudimental cookbook songs here! I found it by searching for a video for 15 to get a better idea of the visuals behind the fake strokes. I played drums all through school, nearly made it to drumline section leader but had some unfortunate health issues. Took a break from drumming for a while as I was living in apartments but finally stumbled upon an old electronic drumset and my practice pad, replete with the hundreds of dollars of sticks and mallets bought over the years. When I wanted to re up my drumming skills I knew there was only one place to go, and started working through the cookbook. Anyways, I won't write a book. It's just amazing to me that this channel exists, and a little sad I had to scroll so far down to find what's obviously the best content on the cookbook solos that exists! I'm gonna go link this channel in a couple forums in the hopes these videos become the top of the search. I want to thank you for everything you've done, for all of drumming. Your books have made drumming intelligible, interesting, teachable, and fun for gajillions of people out there. This book was my backbone for a large portion of my formative years and I worked my ass off to get good both because I loved it and because it was just so easy to learn from this book. I don't want to get all mushy and I already said I wouldn't write a book. I hope this gets to you. I just wanna say thank you

    Gonna be 18 when I do this for my local Perry Band Olympics Competition. I’ve gotten 1st place these past 3 years from solos in these books. Great material, and perfect performance!

    Super proud of these two former students...proud of this performance for me, for Row-Loff, and for The Orchemental Snare Collection...proud of where these guys are today in both of their developments as performers and musicians in the industry.
